Notable Items for Council Meeting on 8/11

As August begins, there is still plenty of community activities to soak up the remainder of summer including this Wednesday’s Take a Bike to Take a Bite event. Over the weekend, I encouraged some neighbors to help me pull a fallen tree out of the Feeder Canal, and many neighbors attended the Walk for the Wait House event at the Glens Falls High School Track. Moments like those reinforce that small action create beautiful change in our environment and community.

The community action at the last Common Council was inspiring, showing that everyone cares about the future of our city. While the parking permit resolution has been tabled, the Quality of Life Committee public meeting on Monday, August 17th at 5pm will continue the discussion with community input. The Common Council public meeting begins at 7:25pm on Tuesday, August 11th, 2026. Be sure to join on the third-floor City Courtroom for a whirlwind of thoughtful public hearings, interesting discussions, and some exciting resolutions. While I will not be in attendance at this meeting as I am on the shores of New Jersey with family, I’ll highlight some resolutions below, but if you want more detail, be sure to delve into the wonderfully organized agenda on the city website.

• The Council will hold a public hearing about a proposed change to the City Code regarding permitting farm stands on certain zoning districts. It will help spur small community farms throughout the city. For more information, please refer to the proposal.

• The Council will discuss and potentially approve amendments to the City Code with property tax exemptions for persons with disabilities and senior citizens. To learn more, view the amended senior citizen tax exemption and the persons with disabilities tax exemption.

• The Council will discuss and potentially set the final public hearing before the adoption of the Glens Falls Comprehensive Plan on August 25th at 7:20pm. Over the past two years, thousands of public comments, and meeting deliberations, the comprehensive plan will provide a long-range framework for land use, economic development, housing, transportation, infrastructure, recreation, sustainability, historic preservation, and community development. • The Council will discuss and potentially approve the appointment of Taylor Basford as the full-time city attorney. For more information, please refer to the resolution.

• The Council will discuss and potentially approve funding the repairs to the Feeder Canal Water Main and the Glens Falls Bridge with some funds from the unanticipated timber revenue. For more information, please refer to the resolution as well as the invoices from the Tom Kubricky Company for the work involved.

• The Council will discuss and potentially approve some changes to timed parking on some portions of city streets. For more information about the changes, please refer to the highlighted updates for the city code.

• The Council will discuss and potentially approve a monthly $500 stipend to Suzanne Scott for temporary assistance in the Building and Code Department. For more information, please refer to the resolution.

• The Council will discuss and potentially approve an encroachment permit between 91-93 Warren Street. For more information, please refer to the proposed plan.

• The Council will discuss and potentially approve Occupency Tax Grant funds to four organizations:

  • $5,000 to the Glens Falls Collaborative for the Traveling Vietnam War Memorial

  • $6,098 to the Glens Falls Collaborative for the Glens Falls Brochure

  • $4,000 to the World Awareness Children’s Museum

  • $1,500 to the North Country Arts
